On Deeper Thoughts
It isn’t especially insightful, but I realized recently that my worldview has become broader and shallower than I would like. As a consequence, I’m re-defining my digital life. In practice, this means paring down RSS feed subscriptions, limiting my screen time, thinking consciously about picking up a book rather than spending another hour with my laptop.
It also redefines the time I spend on this blog. When I launched it, I thought of it as a means of improving my thinking through writing, but in practice it became as deadline driven as anything else in my life. I sometimes find that deadlines bring focus to a project, but I often caught myself skimming the reading to get a post up by my self-imposed deadline.
After rushing to get a post up, I often found that I lacked the will or interest to respond to many of the comments. This is pretty rude when you think about it. Pay Attention is a small blog, and commenting is the greatest compliment anyone could pay it. I want to focus on those conversations.
Finally, I’m re-launching one of my other sites, Strangetastic as a sort of multi-media web magazine. I’m excited about it, and scared. For the first time, I’m planting a flag and saying “This is my work. I tried my best. If I failed, I can only blame myself.” If you’ve never done it, it’s a big deal, and it will demand most of my focus.
I plan to keep this blog up. There will be something pretty much every day. A lot of links, some book reviews, and any writing that I can’t find another place for (including the rest of my series on past jobs).
Anyway, if you’re reading this, thanks for sticking around.
