Survivor Guilt
Just in case anyone’s curious, I didn’t lose my job today, but some friends of mine did. It sucks. There’s nothing that will make it better, and I tried not to say anything but “I’m sorry.”
I’ve only been fired once, and honestly I was so happy that I didn’t have to work there anymore that I ran out and left my coat. It’s still there as far as I know.
I’ve also had to fire someone before. It wasn’t terrible. It turned out they wanted to leave more than I wanted them to go. They got a new job, and if we weren’t friends afterward, we were still good acquaintances.
Today wasn’t like any of that. Today felt more like a storm had blown through, taking some people and leaving others behind. I don’t think anyone ended the day unscathed. Nobody goes to work expecting a tornado to blow through, or a bomb to go off.
